MediaTek recently announced the Helio G90 and G90T chipsets in the 'G Series' in the Indian market Xiaomi's sub-brand, Redmi, recently launched its flagship K20 series of phones in India. Since then the company has been busy talking up the phone and showing off to the world why exactly it's the next big thing in the smartphone industry. For $140, you can expect a solid upgrade over the previous 2.2, featuring the Helio P22 processor (octa-core Cortex-A53), a 6.5-inch HD+ screen, 2 or 3GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage.
The Helio G90 will be the first dedicated gaming chip from MediaTek. The teaser poster that announced its existence doesn’t give away much, but the full reveal is coming soon.
- MediaTek is gearing up to release its first gamer-centric chipset kicking off the brand new Helio G-series on July 30. The manufacturer plans to introduce the G90 SoC at an event in Shanghai. Seeing how gaming phones are gaining momentum this move would position MediaTek in the forefront for future budget gaming devices.
- Mediatek is now gearing up to launch its own smartphone processor for gaming phones with the Helio G90. MediaTek has started teasing an upcoming processor labelled as Helio G90.
We can speculate that the G90 is based on the Helio P90, which has a CPU with two Cortex-A75 cores (2.2GHz) and six A55 cores (2.0GHz). As for the GPU, it’s an Imagination PowerVR GM9446 (970MHz), which promises a 15% improvement over the Mali-G72 MP3 used in the Helio P70.
'Gaming core, awakening'
Will the G90 use the same GPU? MediaTek can improve the gaming experience with a gaming mode like the Kirin chips have. Still, we may see a more powerful GPU – ARM has the Mali-G76 and G77 graphics cores, Imagination has a new line of Furian flagship GPUs (the GM9446 is a mid-range part from the Rogue family).
Gaming phones seem to be rising in popularity, but a common criticism against them is that they use the same chipsets as non-gaming flagships. With chips like the Helio G90 and Snapdragon 855 Plus, they will finally have more to work with than improved cooling and gaming modes.

Well I never said that they won't lower prices on their chips. I already know that their patents were being sold separately. That's why I've said that court ruling is needed.
Helio G90 Phones Reviews
Yesterday, MediaTek has announced the all-new G90 & G90T Soc’s here in India under the G series. The chipsets are designed for use in Mid-range gaming smartphones. These chipsets contain HyperEngine gaming technology by MediaTek. This tech consists of several features that are designed to boost the performance of smartphone games. The chipset is an octa-core CPU clocked at 2.05GHz, which includes the same ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores, same as the latest flagship chipset from Qualcomm and Huawei. The chipset is coupled with a Mali G76 GPU with clock speed up to 800MHz. It also supports up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM.
The company’s announcement suggests that they’re hoping their new chips will find a home in gaming-focused smartphones similar to the current devices out there. However, gaming phones like these have tended to use flagship processors from rival chipmaker Qualcomm in the past, while MediaTek’s chips tend to find a home in midrange and budget devices.
The chipsets are built on 12nm process. It can support up to 64MP camera sensors, as of now, Samsung GW1 is the only sensor which spots the same. The G90 and G90T are the first SoCs in MediaTek’s gaming-focused G-Series lineup. The chipsets support HDR10, and they also have an intelligent network prediction engine that MediaTek says can sense when Wi-Fi quality is degrading and automatically use an LTE connection as a backup. The chips also include a “rapid response engine” to make touchscreen controls feel more responsive. It spots L3 cache, 64MP single camera and multi-camera combinations, quad pixel technology for night shot mode, triple-ISP design and AI facial detection and the power to accelerate AI-camera applications.
At the event, MediaTek compares the Helio G90T with Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G SoCs. The chipmaker says that the Helio G90T clearly outshines the Qualcomm chipsets and also scores higher than the competition in AnTuTu (on paper, real-life scenarios may be different). With the GeekBench 4.1, the new Helio chipset offers 10 percent better results when compared to Snapdragon 730G and 9 percent more than Qualcomm Snapdragon 730.
At the launch event, Xiaomi India head and Global VP Manu Kumar Jain announced that Xiaomi will launch a new Helio G90T powered phone in India. Previously the brand launched the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A budget phones powered by Helio P22 and Helio A22 SoCs respectively in India last year, but this will be the first time the company is coming up with a phone powered by a top-end MediaTek chip. It had been only a few year’s since the ban of Xiaomi to use MediaTek chipset was lifted.
