Streaming videos to your TV isn’t usually that straightforward, you usually have a file that isn’t compatible with your hardware, or software that doesn’t play nice with your hardware, or require configurations that are way over your head. SofaPlay is a Mac app that skips all the headaches and streams your videos with just a drag and drop.
SofaPlay uses and industry standard protocol called UPnP (Universal Plug and Play.) As long as the device plugged into your TV supports rendering via UPnP, SofaPlay should be able to stream to it. Here’s just a small list of devices that work with UPnP:
- Xbox One, and Xbox 360
- Playstation 3, and Playstation 4
- Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-Ray Players
- Sony TVs
- Panasonic Smart Viera TVs
- Google TV
- Windows Media Centers
The SofaPlay interface is very simple, it only features a drag and drop space, where you’ll be dropping in the file you want to stream to your TV. Since SofaPlay can automatically find UPnP compatible devices on your network, you’ll be able to select which device you want to stream to by selecting it in the devices drop down menu. Other controls include a volume slider and an equalizer. SofaPlay does not currently support subtitles (.srt or .sub files), however, it is a feature they expect to include in a later update.
File compatibility depends on the device you’re streaming to, so you’ll need to verify with your device’s manual which video formats are accepted. Most devices today accept the common formats, like .AVI, .MOV, and .MPEG. SofaPlay offers a free version if you would like to try it out first, but it will only stream two minutes worth of video.
SofaPlay is available in the Mac App Store for $4.99.
